Employers Using Social Networking Sites to Investigate You?

Back in the day it was age, race, religion, gender, religion backgrounds, etc, there were being discriminated against in a job search. Now, is it necessary for us to update our "online reputation"? If you are seeking employment and feel that a potential employer is looking into your MySpace, Facebook or other online social network accounts, do you have the right to know your own public records?

The unemployment rate is much higher than past years and many people are still seeking employment. Potential employers have to constantly shift through the wide range of talent pool to narrow down prospective employees. But does that mean you may have been disqualified due to your personal information you prefer to keep private and personal? After all, good employers should be focus on looking through skills, experience, or talent. Many employers are starting to check your public groups ad draw the wrong information about you. What would you do if this happened to you?

Your reputation and email records

If you are looking for a job today, with the economy the way it is, you must be aware that employers are being flooded with resumes more than ever.

Did you know that the employer could consider looking at your email and doing a search in the social network sites and/or postings to find your profiles? What is your email was "stolen" from you and someone posted falsified information? At any rate, it is would be beneficial for you to verify your personal online records by doing an email record search.

And, what if you have a common name like "John Smith" and there is the possibility of quite a few people, hundreds even, having a bad online reputation? Does the employer know for sure it is not you they are looking into? You should also do another search, "people search" of your name to find this information out as well.

Here are a few tips that might be able to help you in your process:

1. Create yourself a very unique Google profile
2. Create a profile on Naymz, Linkedin, Zoominfo, or such and add an accurate professional biography about yourself

Don't let yourself be discriminated for something that you are not even aware of. Make sure all your public records are accurate and nothing has snuck in there to spoil your professional or personal reputation.
