You can get your news anywhere, but when you want to know what is going on in your local area, the best source you have is the local news reporters that report for your local station. You can read blurbs and items online, but you get the best information by watching the news each night. It may seem, especially on some small stations, that there are no requirements to become a news reporter, but that is not true. These folks really do care about the news, and they are often the ones going out to find out what is going on. They are not just reading from a teleprompter.

Most news reporters have degrees in journalism. This means they have learned much more about gathering facts and information than you may realize. They know where they can go and what they can do to get the story they want, and where they must stop before they cross a line of privacy. These folks spend years in college learning these things, along with extensive classes on writing, grammar, and ethics. If you want to be one of the news reporters you see on your nightly news, sign up for those college classes now.

There are some things to know about being news reporters. This is not a job where you show up in nice clothes and looking good, just to sit in front of a camera for a half an hour. You don't get to go home. You will work a full work day with a lot of overtime in some cases. Those news reporters that you see doing your news in the morning have been there for a few hours preparing, and probably stay all morning working on stories until they again deliver the news at noon. After that, new reporters come in, work all afternoon and through the evening. It can be a very intense career.

You don't have to be extremely good looking to be news reporters. Some assume that, but that is not the case. What you do have to worry about is being tidy, neat, and able to put together a professional and stylish wardrobe. You have to keep your teeth white and your eyebrows plucked, but you don't have to be a beauty pageant winner to work in the news. You just have to be presentable and clean cut. You also have to be able to speak clearly and concisely, and you also have to keep a straight face during sad or even funny stories. Those are the attributes that will get you a good gig as a news reporter.

Most news reporters start out at very small stations. They are often field reporters at first. This means that your first gig may be a live shoot at a local BBQ competition or house fire. When you have shown you can speak in front of the camera and deliver quality stories (no matter what the subject matter), you may then move up to the newsroom. After you have established yourself there, you can try for jobs in larger markets, and even national markets. It is not an easy career, but news reporters often have very fulfilling careers. It's a lot of work, but for the right person, a great career choice.
