By Fida H

Solar energy has consistently grown 33% in the past thirty years within 1979-2010. It is projected to be over 40% for this decade. With an estimated 32 GW of solar power installed globally, 7.2 GW was installed last year alone, according to John Addison, publisher of the Clean Fleet Report.

Solar energy is becoming more marketable by the day, and now represents a large portion of new construction related jobs. If you are a contractor or interested in becoming a contractor, be a part of this rapidly growing industry by getting your solar contractors license.

The basic steps below highlight how people with solar training can get a solar contractor's license in the state of California. It is important to understand that processes slightly differ from state to state. Thus, Licenses acquired in the State of California may not be recognized in another state.

Step 1 - Go to State License Board Website

Visit the California State License Board website at cslb.ca.gov.

Step 2 - Confirm License Classification

The classification for a Solar Contractors license is Class "C", which is for specialty contractors. According to the California State License Board, there are 41 separate "C" license classifications for contractors whose construction work or primary contracting business requires specialized skills, building trades, or crafts. The exact "C" license for solar is C-46. C-46 is the license classification that should be applied for to obtain a solar contractors license.

Step 3 - Be Qualified

Make sure you qualify. The state of California requires journeyman level experience through apprenticeship training or college education, and an actual business entity. Without prior solar training and experience you will not be considered qualified.

Applicants should have at least four years of experience in solar. Nonetheless, the California State License Board may grant up to three years of credit towards the four year requirement for completed education and/or apprenticeship programs in the solar specialty. Education can include a Bachelors degree, certificate, and credited solar courses. Thus, if you don't have any prior experience in solar, you may begin by taking solar training.

Step 4 - Thoroughly Complete Application

Complete the appropriate application form and submit it along with a nonrefundable application fee. Application forms must be fully complete! Incomplete applications will be rejected. Wait four to six weeks for your application to be processed. Once processed you will be sent an examination date. In some cases it can take much longer than four to six weeks. Completing and accurately filling out all the requested information within the application form helps reduce the processing time. The application form can be printed at the California State License Board website.

Step 5 - Wait & Prepare

Generally, it takes approximately four to six weeks before your application is processed and a notice is sent to you to appear for examination. Use the waiting period to refresh your knowledge through study tools, or even attending related review courses and additional solar training.

Step 6 - Take the Test

Once approved you should receive your examination date and location. Testing locations are distributed within eight cities. These cities are: San Diego, San Bernardino, Buena Park, Inglewood, Ventura, Oakland, Sacramento and Fresno. You will be assigned to the nearest location of your business address.

If this is your first contractor license examination, you will have to take two exams. The first exam is the general law & business examination and the second will be the trade examination. In this case your trade will be solar. The examinations will each be given two hours and thirty minutes to complete, making it a total of five hours.

Failure to show up will result in a $50 rescheduling fee. You are granted eighteen months after the approval of your application to achieve a passing grade. Within this time period, you can take the exam as many times as necessary until you pass.

Step 7 - Wait for Score

Wait to receive your score. If you failed you are provided with a breakdown of your percentage score for each section of the examination and can reschedule to take the examination again. If you passed, you are simply told you passed in the letter. A certificate and your license number will then be sent to you.

In conclusion, experience plays a major role in qualifying for a Solar Contractors License. If you do not meet the required experience but you're interested in getting a solar contractors License in the state of California, start with a certificate program. There are great renewable energy institutions that offer solar training certification. As mentioned earlier, education in your trade can be credited towards the four years of required experience. Don't waste anymore time, register to a solar training certification program today!

Getting Your First Job - Interview Tips For Teenagers

You can prepare for your first interview through practicing with friends and family. Don't get discouraged if you don't pass the real interview when it comes up. Often, employers will do phone interviews to screen prospective applicants out.

You will learn what to say and what not to say with each interview. It just takes a little practice and confidence in oneself. It has been said that it takes about ten interviews to land one job. This may or may not be true for you, depending upon the job you want to get into.

As a teen, you are presented with many challenges. The biggest challenge though, is in getting to know what kind of person you really are. This will come through time, through your own growth. People usually don't change personally, but some of their interests will change as they get older.

For example, a career chosen as a teen may not serve him well in later years, because he will have matured. That same career may then not be as interesting. Then, it may be time for a change of careers. Many who are working do not like their careers, but may not know what else they want to do for a living.

Teen Quizzes can help you locate a field of interest. To be happy in a career, one has to be interested in it, and have a passion for working in that job. If one knows which careers he has an interested in, all he needs to do is choose one that fits his personality, natural abilities, and aptitude.

Signs That You Are Being Bullied

In every 10 workers, one of them has been bullied in their career.

Yes, in every workplace there are bullies who victimize other workers simply because of their false belief to maintain control or status quo, or when they are feeling" threatened" of a smarter neophyte, or simply because of some psychological problems they may have been suffering since childhood. Just like children bullies, these professionals whom respected by their peers and subordinates alike have this aberrant behaviors which should be checked asap by their superiors or managers before it could wreck havoc to the company.

A victim of bullying must say foul! and do the necessary steps to vindicate him-her/self and have the bully faced the consequences of his/her acts. However, if the company has a culture of tolerating bullies for one reason or another, better for the victim to leave the company asap and seek one with sane principles and live a life sans the presence of a pest bully.

Bullying is a form of an abuse. A victim suffers tremendous psychological and physical harm. In fact, a study reveals that some health-harming manifestations such as high blood pressure, heart attack, depression, etc. are common scenario to bullied individual where as a victim he/she suffers tremendous emotional torture, especially if is what we call " mobbing" or simply put, a group of bullies picking on one victim till the he/she opts to resign.

The author had to walk the plank once due to "mobbing" and now trying to share wisdom from the said experience. Thanks to my bullies; however, sorry to disappoint you guys, am back in the arena and wiser not committing same mistake again.

Common signs that you are being bullied, as what I experienced then:

1. You dread Mondays... you do not have the energy to go to work. You feel sick...as if you did not have a good night sleep, too lazy to move and worse, you feign sick just to evade your tormentor even for a day.

2. They yell at you -- in front of other people--during meeting as if you were a slave and they were your masters.

3. They exclude you in meeting and other activities giving you feeling isolated as if they were against you... for no apparent reason at all. Well, this is the price to pay for being young or smart or kind --sort of you are cursed for being given such enviable characteristic.

4. Always the last person to know about changes in the company's policies, etc. making you look naive at your co-workers' assessment.

5. Your tormentor spreading rumors discrediting you, say assaulting your reputations and in the process, gain control over the social environment for his/her own advantage, thus giving him/her the feeling of superiority and the like.

6. They are talking behind your back ( means you are two steps ahead ) and when you are present, they have innuendos, etc. aimed at you.

Subtle ways of bullying someone is giving a victim a feeling that he/she is nothing compared to the tormentor by giving one condescending or insulting look, and sans giving other people around a hint that bullying is happening. Well, others are just clueless, or simply naive about it. And they will be surprised when the victim opted a resignation than prolonging the agony of being bullied sans seeking help from indifferent co-workers.

Bullying is a kind of cruelty; sometimes, the tormentor does not know that he/she has been a bully to someone, sometime, somewhere... lest he/she is a psychopath bully; no remorse or a tinge of guilt is seen from him/her. Beware of this kind of bully; a snake clothed in a man's suit ready to devour an unsuspecting victim in the workplace.

Would you rather be a victim or a witness to bullying? Which would you prefer?

Leader Productivity Vs The Fatigue Demon: Six Steps to Keep Fatigue From Eroding Your Productivity

By Geraldine Markel, Ph.D.

Fatigue plays a critical part in the performance of current or aspiring leaders: it impairs leadership effectiveness, inhibiting productivity and excellence. If the leader of an organization functions without energy and enthusiasm, she or he is not a good role model. Any negative effects of the leader's performance can cascade down through the organization.

Fatigue operates as an insidious barrier to leader productivity. Like a mysterious and demonic force, Fatigue saps the energy required to engage in critical leadership functions. Leaders need stamina, mental energy, and enthusiasm to:

• Spark their creativity: to think out of the box, see the big picture, and gain long-term perspective.
• Engage in analytical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.
• Become lifelong learners. Who can read, remember, and apply information when they are too tired to focus and concentrate?
• Persevere under stressful conditions and be resilient when a crisis strikes.

Is the Fatigue Demon undermining your ability to be a leader? Has Fatigue teamed up with some of the other Demons of Distraction in your life, such as Technology, Stress, Illness/Medication, Others, Activities, Spaces or Unruly Mind?

The most common cause of fatigue is poor sleep or lack of sleep. There are between 50 and 70 million Americans living tired lives, with about 40 million of those reporting some type of sleep disorder. Unquestionably, exhaustion has a negative influence on attention, memory, mood, safety, and general performance. For example, driving under the influence of fatigue can be as devastating as driving under the influence of alcohol-and you can't be inspiring at work if you don't make it there safely.

Fatigue can also be related to leader burnout, a particular problem in the "new normal" climate of technological and economic realities. For example, there are estimates that 247 billion emails are sent per day. How many of these are delivered to a leader's mailbox? Receiving hundreds of messages each day is overwhelming and often leaves no down time. The artificial sense of urgency generated by message technology further erodes the amount and quality of sleep. One study reported that over 65 percent of respondents answered email in bed, while over 45 percent placed devices (cell phones, for example) on their nightstands--and kept the audible message alerts switched on all night long.

Regardless of the reasons underlying fatigue, feeling tired makes you more vulnerable to other Demons of Distraction. For example, the more tired you feel, the more vulnerable you are to stress and its effects. This can leave you more apt to procrastinate or avoid a tedious task, causing even more stress. Therefore, any improvement in sleep will help reduce your vulnerability to stress, and any improvement in stress management will help you be more energized and focused.

How do you know if the Fatigue Demon has become a serious threat to your leadership abilities? Due to the "24/7 Warrior" mentality in the business world, leaders may not even be aware of the extent of their fatigue and its effects--but there are telltale signs. Family members or co-workers may be the first to notice:

• Poor emotional regulation as seen with irritation, impatience, or angry outbursts
• Rigid thinking as seen in an all-or-none, now-or-never mentality
• Physical signs including slouching, walking slowly, yawning, or holding your head
• Work slippages including inaccurate, incomplete or missing work
• Forgetfulness, disorganization, inattention, and poor time management

Whether you seek others' input or they volunteer observations on your behavior, don't shoot the messenger. Denial and defensiveness won't help you regain your leadership edge-but the following steps will.

Six Steps to Stop the Downward Spiral of Leader Performance:

Step 1: Increase awareness. Ask, "How often am I running on empty? Is fatigue interfering with creativity, motivation or memory?" Keep a sleep journal; identify any problems such as insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, etc. Ask, "What is sapping my mental energy?"

Step 2: Take action. Reorganize your sleep routine so you can be better rested. Make sleep a top priority: get to bed earlier. Consider setting an alarm an hour before bedtime as a signal to stop activities and wind down. The bedroom should be a "No Fly Zone" for electronic devices such as email alerts that unnecessarily interrupt sleep.

Step 3: Stop the constant state of overwhelm and stress. As a leader you have the legitimate power to impose the rules; say no nicely, be ruthless about delegating, and take a break or two during the day. Leaders need quiet think-time to analyze and solve problems. One strategy is to impose an electronic lockdown; a specific period of time during which technology does not distract you.

Step 4: Stop multitasking. Don't buy into the myth that it helps you: recent research indicates that it's ineffective to do two things at the same time. It drains your mental energy and leads to inaccuracies.

Step 5: Consider fatigue and safety. When fatigued, don't drive, use power tools, or undertake risky activities such as climbing ladders.

Step 6: Increase the use of exercise and stress management strategies to bolster physical and mental energy, endurance, and resilience.

Sometimes, the simpler a suggestion sounds, the more difficult it is to do. Start with one thing at a time. Even the smallest change can yield positive results.

Opening a Yoga Studio - The Process From A to Z

Many yoga teachers love practicing and teaching yoga so much that they decide they want to open up their own practices. While their intentions are positive, the decision to create a new yoga studio in the community is one that requires a great deal of careful consideration, planning and support.

Business Plan

A business plan is the best first stage of planning when deciding to go down the entrepreneurial path. A business plan is a document that includes your vision, as well as the financial, marketing, staff, sales, hiring, bookkeeping, start-up and maintenance aspects that are involved in building and sustaining your dream.

Setting Goals

When writing a business plan, the vision statement is the crucial first step. You must decide what the purpose for your yoga practice will be, as well as the type of clientele you would like to serve. It is important to narrow this target clientele as narrowly as you can to take the next steps to attract this group of people.

Record your goals for your studio as part of the visioning process. Write down specific key measurable results you aim to achieve through running your own business.

Determine the strategies you will have to use to financially sustain the studio. Hosting workshops, teaching yoga classes, having retail and online sales, private clients and teacher training programs are all potential income generating ideas.

Assessing Available Resources

At some point during the business planning process, the question of your available resources is certain to arise. Some practitioners decide to have investors get involved in financing their studio, while others refinance their own home to do so. Still others get part-time jobs to save the funds necessary to start a yoga operation, or seek small amounts of money from supportive friends and family members. Some people hold garage sales or do bake sales and other creative fundraising events.

It is helpful if owners can rent space in the location they wish to create a studio in, as this can save a lot of time and money. A place that used to serve as a yoga studio or fitness center is ideal, though it is also possible to use a space that was once an office or store. In the case of using a space that was not used before for yoga, it is important to take into consideration the tremendous potential costs of renovating the place to make it suitable as a studio.

Figure out how many classes, workshops or teacher trainings you will have to teach per year to cover your annual and start-up costs. Make sure you do not overestimate these figures, as they are very important in the planning and fundraising process.

Naming a Yoga Studio

Once you have written a thorough business plan and assessed that you have the necessary resources available to manifest your yoga studio vision, it is important to consider naming your studio. It is best to contact a trademark attorney at this point to see if your desired name is available. If you are unable to afford an attorney, you can see if anyone else is using the same name you have chosen by searching online.

Trademark Process

If you find that no one else is using the name you have selected for your yoga studio, you can visit the website for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Check if anyone has a pending application or federal registration for the name you plan to use.

After doing this, visit your state's trademark database to make sure that your desired name has not been taken by another yoga business, fitness or wellness center.

When going to file your business name online, be ready to pay approximately $335 to register your trademark. It is helpful to work with an attorney on this process to try your best to prevent receiving trademark application rejections.

Though opening a yoga practice is a challenging process that requires a lot of patience, persistence and commitment, many entrepreneurs will tell you that running a studio is well worth the effort it takes to create one.

How to conduct a successful and effective business meeting

The bane of every worker or volunteer is the meeting that lasts for hours and accomplishes little. While some people simply stifle inner groans and tolerate whatever contortions managers, the board, or a committee wants to make, other people have identified and implemented ways to make meetings more meaningful for the participants.

Several talented managers have defined meetings as falling on a scale between rambling and unstructured to focused and structured. The goal of most of these managers is to get their meetings as far over toward the focused and structured as possible. In that vein, an effective meeting might be defined as one that:

-Takes only as much time as is needed to accomplish its goals

-Sticks to the subject

-Meets its objectives or goals

There are several practical tools that anyone chairing a meeting can use to make a meeting more effective. These tools are ones that have been suggested by top-level managers, meeting experts, association resources, and books and articles on the subject. They are intended to be practical resources that can be used immediately to make meetings more effective.

Agendas

It is nearly impossible to talk about effective meetings without discussing agendas. A properly prepared agenda can have a tremendous influence on the meeting¡¦s outcome. Some agendas are more effective than others. Cyril Houle, author of ¡§Governing Boards¡¨, says that a meeting agenda should be carefully planned: ¡§The items listed should not be merely sketchy notations indicating generally what is to be discussed but should be described at such length that the board will know what to expect. The person responsible for the presentation of each item should be noted, as should the expected length of time for its consideration at the meeting. Due care must be given to keep the agenda of the board meeting from becoming too full. If matters can be handled outside the meeting, they should be.¡¨ (Houle, Governing Boards, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, CA 1989)

Many managers recommend that the meeting agendas be as detailed as possible. Simply putting down ¡§Treasurer¡¦s Report¡¨ is too vague and allows for too many unexpected issues to be brought up during a meeting.

Another manager suggests listing only committees on the meeting agenda that have something to report. Traditionally, an agenda might list every single committee, which leaves the committee chair feeling that they have to give some sort of report, even if they don¡¦t have anything to say.

Communication

Communication between meeting attendees is important. Letting all participants see an agenda before the meeting starts helps them come prepared to each meeting. It gives them a chance to review issues before the meeting begins and even get questions answered outside of the meeting.

Meeting Calendars

A meeting calendar can help a manager running a meeting determine when reports will be given and schedule issues to be discussed. This keeps participants from feeling that every issue must be discussed at every meeting. One manager said he uses the meeting calendar to help impose discipline at meetings. While the manager may not want to forbid anything that is not scheduled, he or she should encourage participants to stick to it.

Controlled Environments

Many managers have found that they can manipulate the meeting¡¦s physical environment to have a positive effect on the efficiency of meetings. Some managers even go so far as to remove all chairs from a meeting room, forcing participants to stand so that the meeting will go faster.

Even those managers that don¡¦t take things to such an extreme note the difference in length and meeting efficiency based on when they are held, where they are held, and the amenities available.

Meeting Procedures

Every meeting must have some sort of procedure by which it is run. General Henry Robert developed meeting procedures in 1876 by adapting the rules followed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Since that time, Robert¡¦s Rules of Order have been generally accepted as an efficient way to run a group meeting.

Some people, though, may resist Robert¡¦s Rules of Order as too stifling or because they inhibit debate. However, when used correctly, Robert¡¦s Rules can do just the opposite. They are ultimately meant to ensure that the majority is able to accomplish its goals while the views of the minority are protected and heard.

A danger to Robert¡¦s Rules of Order is what Edward Scannell, director of the University Conference Bureau of Arizona State University and past president of Meeting Planners International, calls ¡§motion sickness.¡¨ He points out that not all items require motions. If participants can agree to something quickly, then they should do so and save the procedures for when they are needed.

Consent Agendas

For every item opened for discussion, someone will feel obligated to say something. However, not all items that come before a group need to be discussed. There are always routine actions that must be voted upon due to tradition, bylaws, or policies. These might include contract renewals, ceremonial decrees, setting meeting times, etc. One way to reduce the amount of time spent on these routine items is for the chairperson to develop a consent agenda.

The consent agenda is given to all participants before the meeting. When the meeting starts, any participant can request that an item be removed from the consent agenda and opened for general discussion. All other items are voted on together, without further discussion.

It is important to note that the consent agenda should be used only to save time, not to push something through on an unaware team or board. The only items that should be placed on a consent agenda are those that are highly likely to pass unanimously without discussion or amendment.

Straw Votes

A straw vote is as much a consensus-building tool as a time-saving tool. A straw vote involves introducing an issue and allowing a moderate amount of discussion. When the chairperson senses that there is a majority or consensus on an issue, he or she can ask for a non-binding¡Xor straw¡Xvote on the issue using a show of hands. This enables participants to see whether there is a consensus and how other people are voting. If there is a clear majority, the chairperson can ask, ¡§Are you ready to vote?¡¨ The straw vote can cut down on discussion time as it reveals when a group is ready to vote, often long before they realize they are ready.

Discussion-Only Items

Some group shave found they can save time by bringing up an item at separate meetings. The first time an item is brought up it is either introduced without discussion (preferably at the end of a meeting) or introduced for discussion only. At the next meeting it can be brought up for a vote without any discussion. This method allows participants to work out any problems they have with the item between meetings instead of on the spot. They can then come to a meeting more prepared and comfortable with their decision.

The reward to implementing the tools discussed here can be a more effective meeting style.

Starting small businesses

Starting your own business is a big venture and has probably been everyone’s dream at one time or another. It doesn’t have to be just a dream and with a little planning and persistence you can make your dream a reality. Plan out your business ahead of time, decide what the business will be and what you will and will not deal with in terms of products and services. Scope out your competition and make sure your business is in a demographically advantageous area for whatever your goods or services may be. Don’t, for example, open a hardware store in a town that already has three. Look for a location that will benefit your business.

You will want to register your business before you get started. You must decide if you want to be incorporated or not. An accountant can help you decide what is right for you. You must register the name of your business with your county and make sure that no other business is using that name. There is a nominal fee to do this and it only takes a few minutes to fill out the application. You will need this registration in order to do such things as open business accounts at your local bank and you will want to be sure that the name you have chosen has not been used before you have any business cards, letterheads or signs made up.

Once you have chosen your location, get a feel for the average rental costs in your area in order to help calculate how much your start up and maintenance costs will be. You will have to pay security costs to acquire your rental property unless you are planning to purchase the property for your business. Calculate also, what you will need as far as inventory to get started and try to have some customers lined up before you even hang your sign on the door. Don’t forget to acquire liability insurance and decide how many employees you will need. All of these things need to be considered when you decide how much money you will need to start your business. Get everything sorted out before you go to the bank so there will be no surprises.

How to start an antique business on a shoestring budget

The business of buying and selling antiques is a wonderful experience for anyone with a spirit of entrepreneurship. And surprisingly enough, it takes far less investment capital than one might think.

For many, ‘antiquing’ begins as a hobby that can quickly evolve into a passion. Many collectors develop a true ‘love’ for certain, collectible items. All antiques have a story and often times, the story is far more important than the item was in its prime. It has often been said that “there's a collector for everything and something for every collector.” Therefore, the entrepreneur can safely assume that there’s a buyer for everything under the sun. But how does one find these buyers? What of start-up cost and overhead? Should you advertise? And how does the ‘collectible’ market compliment the antique market? As with every new project, you need a plan. Let’s examine some ways to break into the antique and collectible business with a minimum of investment.

First, you should do your homework. Most new antique dealers wisely begin with a modest inventory, selected after first testing the local markets. You need an idea of what sells and what doesn’t. Now, keep in mind that just about everything will sell, eventually. But you need a product that’s fairly accessible and moves quickly. Where do you find such a product? For starters, check your local newspapers and find auctions in your area. Household and estate auctions are excellent sources of information on the relative value of an item in your area. Pay close attention to the numbers of people that bid on a particular type of item. Glassware may be a hot commodity in your area. Or it may go ‘dirt cheap.’ You need to be aware of the local supply and demand before you settle on a given item line. This doesn’t mean you should restrict yourself to only a few items. It just means that by keeping you inventory to a few product lines, you can become more knowledgeable in less time. And to the antique dealer, product knowledge is everything.

Local estate sales can also be a valuable source of both knowledge and inventory. But be wary of first day prices. Most estate sales last two to three days. The first day, most prices are inflated and will gradually decrease as the sale progresses. Don’t let personal tastes interfere with your sense of business. If you pay that first day price, you're likely paying retail. A dealer who buys at retail market prices will quickly go out of business. You need the bargains, even if means settling for a slightly less desirable item.

Arm yourself with some much needed expertise by visiting your local bookstore. There are some excellent price guides available, many with hints on how to spot forgeries and fakes. One note on this subject. When looking at the price guides, remember that they are just that: a guide. Nothing is ever written in stone and you may find a wide disparity in regional prices. Abingdon pottery is extremely popular and moderately expensive in the Northeast U.S., but is found at ‘give-away’ prices in the Midwest. Know your market.

You’ve got some inventory at this point and the question is where do you find the buyers? The finest antiques in the world are worthless unless you have a buyer. One solution is ‘flea market malls.’ Don’t be mislead by the name. Flea market malls are viable outlets for both antiques and collectibles. They come in all shapes and sizes, some dealing only in upscale items while others are more modest in inventory. There are some tremendous advantages to these outlets and it may be worth your while to do a little investigating. Most malls rent out space to vendors, allowing the vendor to arrange the displays, attach prices and leave instructions for negotiations. The mall will handle the actual sales then pay the vendors on a regular schedule, such as weekly or bi-monthly. This leaves the vendor free to search for new items to dale. So malls charge a small commission in addition tom the rental space while others charge nothing but the fee for the space used. Check around for the best deal in your area.

Another option is the internet. There a host of online auction services, featuring regular, dependable ‘shoppers.’ The buyer is only a click away with such internet powerhouses as Ebay.com and Yahoo Auctions. These companies actually act as a broker, allowing you to set a minimum price on your item, then posting the item along with pictures and text descriptions. This is by far the most ‘overhead free’ method of getting into the antique business . Whichever method you choose, remember, there’s a buyer for everything. You just need the product.

How to run a successful freelance writing business

Running your own freelance writing business can be both exciting and scary, but the most important thing to remember is that you are in business. Your business will not run itself; there is much you will have to attend to in addition to writing. On addition to knowing how to write well, you also have to know the basics of running a business.

One of the most important aspects of running your freelance writing business will be scheduling and completing the work. One of the first questions clients will ask you (after ¡§How much does this cost?¡¨) will probably be ¡§How long will this take?¡¨ This depends upon how fast you can write well. If you are good, you can do in two days what it might take another writer a week to do. When pondering how long a project will take, think about the other work you have to do within that same time period. If you have several projects with close deadlines, you need to give yourself plenty of time to do each of them well. And at first, each project may take more time than you would wish. Also think sabot how much research you have to do for a project. If you have all the information at hand, you can probably complete it much more quickly than if you have to do quite a bit of reading first. Maybe you have an interview to do; you have to schedule that into your time frame. Consider adding on two days when you tell a client when their work will be done to compensate for unforeseeable events. And never take on more work than you can handle. You'll lose more clients by missing a deadline than any other way.

Another important aspect of your freelance writing business is building the client-writer relationship. You should set out to win clients, not assignments. If you can build a nice stable of clients with returning assignments, your income will increase more than if you treat each job as just an assignment. Here are a few tips on building good relationships:

- Seek out clients who can provide you with steady assignments rather just occasional work.

- Go out of your way to please your clients, especially regular ones.

- Build a personal relationship. Drop them an occasional line or even have coffee if that's feasible.

- Participate in client activities. Go to events that you are invited to attend.

- Be especially considerate of secretaries and assistants. They have a great deal of control over who sees their bosses and who doesn't. And you never know¡Ksome day they might be promoted and become one of your clients.

- Never, ever be rude or lose your temper. Be very patient and courteous, no matter what your real feelings are. Vent somewhere else.

Good time management skills are essential for the freelancer, since you don't have someone hanging over your shoulder making sure you get things done on time. Make sure your office is efficiently organized so you can find everything quickly. Keep separate files for each project, and consider part-time secretarial help if you need it and can afford it. Remember, your time is money, so make each hour count be turning unproductive time into billable time. Try to do as much business as possible by email, phone or fax rather than in person or by mail. You will save so much time this way and remember time is money.

Another very important aspect of your freelance writing business is getting paid. To insure this, you have to know how to bill clients and how to follow up on clients who are slow to pay. You will need to send an invoice to each client for each project completed. You can buy preprinted invoices at most office supply stores or you can write a simple one yourself, detailing the date, who it's to, what work was done, the amount owed to you, and your payment terms. Most writers expect to be paid within thirty days. Send the invoice promptly, within a week of completing the work. If you have trouble collecting payment, send a polite letter to your client requesting payment. Do not threaten or sound angry; the client may simply have forgotten. If you don't hear back within two weeks, send another polite, but a bit firmer letter. Send this letter certified, return receipt requested. If you still don't get paid within two weeks, try a phone call. Keep track of everything said, and remain polite but firm. You may suggest partial payments if the client can't pay all at once. Any further communication should be by certified letter. Continue sending letters at two-week intervals until you receive payment. If you still are not paid, you can either turn collection over to an attorney or collections agency. Warn your client before you take such action.

Do it yourself: how to set up an effective small business phone system

Setting up a small business requires consideration into many aspects. One of the most important aspects is communication. Having an effective system in which one’s clients can contact them is imperative. Different businesses require different types of business phone system.

If one is a sole proprietor and works from home, a simple phone system is required. One can either use their own personal line or set up an additional line for business purposes only. Current technology will allow one to set up an additional line on their existing line. One can add an additional number with a distinctive ring tone. This will help differentiate between incoming business and personal calls. Another feature – ‘caller identification’ also aids in distinguishing personal from business calls. This is especially helpful when one is already on a call, and does not have the advantage of the distinctive ring feature.

One may choose not to set up an additional line, but choose a voice mailbox instead. One can rent a number from an independent voicemail service. Calls will go to that number, and one can remotely retrieve messages at their convenience. This also allows one to choose their area code. If one lives in New York, but wants to expand their business to Los Angeles, they can set up a voicemail box in Los Angeles, and appear as a local business.

Some voicemail services also provide the option of call forwarding. One can forward calls to their home or cell phone, and always be available. There are even sophisticated systems with a feature called “Find Me”. This feature will forward all incoming calls to all numbers on file, until it locates you. Features such as caller identification, whisper and conference call are also available on this type of system. Whisper is a feature whereas when one answers their call, the system announces that they have an incoming call from their phone service. It allows the person the option to accept the call or reroute it to voicemail.

If one has a national business, they may consider using a toll free number. Toll free numbers may be available through one’s local carrier. If not, one can choose an independent provider and have calls routed to their home or cellular phone. Toll free numbers can be restricted to incoming calls from landlines or cellular phones. Most toll free carriers charge a surcharge when calls are placed from a public pay phone. Toll free numbers can be customized to spell out words. This enables your client to remember the number.

Also keep in mind that if the business in national; one should take care in investing in a good long distance plan. Many providers offer specific business packages. And many providers also offer all-inclusive packages, such as unlimited local and long distance calls for one price. This will enable one to have a stable phone bill every month. A small business may have several people or departments. For this business, it is essential to have an incoming screener and router. If you have three departments, you can have a system in place that gives the caller the option to choose which department they desire by pushing an appropriate extension or button. If the business entails employees to be mobile, the calls can be redirected to their cell phones.

Sometimes all lines are busy, and a patron may be required to hold. The hold message should be used to the businesses advantage. One can record announcements or answers to frequently asked questions on this feature. Use this feature as effective advertising and marketing tool. If frequently asked questions are addressed, this can reduce call volume and save the business money. This is particularly true with toll free numbers, where the business pays for the calls.

Setting up an effective business system can aid you with getting and keeping customers. It also can be an effective marketing tool. There are systems to fit any budget, and any size small business. With a little research and creativity, any business can have an effective small business phone system.

Best Way To Start An Internet Home Business

You can literally start an internet home business in a few minutes simply by signing up for a program with your name and email address, whereas with a brick and mortar business far more planning goes into not only the business, but financial planning, finding premises, sourcing stock, etc.

When it comes to making a choice between the many internet home businesses that are available it is not easy, but it is advisable to plan ahead before making the final decision. Although you want to get up and running as quickly as possible making a quick decision may not necessarily be the right decision.

Spend time thinking about what you really want to achieve with your internet home business. Prepare a budget and work out carefully what you can afford to spend on your internet home business monthly. Perhaps you want to be able to expand the business in the future, add your personality to your website, share your articles and opinions with your website viewers, or generate multiple streams of income by adding more programs to your website.

The above points and more need to be considered before you start an internet home business because when you know what you want to achieve it is easier to make the right decision.

The last thing you want is to be in a situation where you have worked really hard at promoting a website that belongs to somebody else (for example an affiliate website) only to find that the program closes down and you are then left with literally nothing.

It will also be really frustrating if you want to start making changes to your website and adding new programs or articles only to find you do not have access to the source code.

Thinking ahead then, consider starting an internet home business that you have full control of, rather than just promoting an affiliate site that you cannot make any changes to or add to in the future. In other words you need to own your own domain and website so that you have access to the full source code.

You need to be in a position that you are free to make any changes you wish to your website. This will enable you to keep up with the latest trends on the internet (for example being able to add a video to your website) as well as being able to offer a variety of affiliate programs to your visitors as well as being able to remove programs that are not performing and add new ones.

With your own domain you will be able to choose your theme and keywords and optimize your website for the search engines so that you can achieve good rankings in the organic search results and attract free targeted traffic.

Owning your own domain and website will enable you to grow and expand your internet home business. You will be able to continually add unique content to your website in the form of your own articles as well as create new web pages targeted at new keywords. You will be able to build valuable back-links to your website to secure higher rankings in the search results.

Having your own domain and website will enable you to create a totally unique internet home business. You can change the design, add photos and images, add your own articles, add and remove programs, exchange links, etc. Literally it is yours to do what you want with. This gives you total independence and is the way you will be able to grow your business.

Those new to the internet may be thinking they don’t need to do all that. But, bear in mind that as your knowledge and experience grows and you become more familiar with internet marketing techniques and other programs you may want to promote, you will be able apply all your newly learned skills and ideas much easier if you have your own domain and website.

There will be far more options available to you on the internet if you have your own domain an website, as well as unlimited room for growth.

Starting an internet home business that enables you to own your own domain and website is the best way to provide you with a solid foundation on which to freely build and grow your very own unique home business on the internet.

Business Opportunities Advice

Starting your own home business is not a simple task. However once you’ve made that first move and worked your way through everything the next most important thing is to market your business. That is where most of us go wrong – either because we’re not entirely market savvy people or because we try to do what most of the companies or organizations we know are doing right now.

However for your own unique business and your budget this might not be the best place to look at. A common mistake people who start up a business or even after a successful period of the business do is try as much as possible to advertise the business at different places.

Did you know that studies show that an average person has to see an ad at least 6 times before actually considering buying that product or service? If this is the case, then advertising purely will not be the best of options to take.

Finding your business opportunity in itself is an art. So what you must do is first find out ways and means of how you can promote your business that will bring positive results. One of the easiest ways of doing this is buy telling your friends, family, neighbors, previous work collogues, basically everyone you know about your business and what it does. This way, even if they don’t use your service they will recommend it to people they know and we all know what wonders ‘word of mouth’ can do.

Provide services from your business to charitable causes – Not only does this make your business show upon good light but will gain respect among the community as a decent and genuine business.

Another good way of promoting your business and tapping into new opportunities is by partnering or co-advertising products with another similar or complimenting business. For example, if you’re running a business to do with financial consulting, you can partner with a local bank to display your card and in turn you may direct them to the bank if a loan is required by a client etc. Your local community is a great source that can be tapped in to.

Most importantly, look out for opportunities that can add value to your business as well as the community or customer base you’re looking at as people buy confidence in a business more than the product itself.

Home business: when to get a freelance writer

A homegrown business can stay about the same size and still provide lucrative income for the owner-operator. But if you want your business to grow and thrive, one of the strategies you might consider is to hire a freelance writer to help you with internal and external communications.

Freelance writers usually work part-time for one or more companies. They can work locally onsite by visiting an office daily or occasionally to work on assignments. Or they can work from remote locations as telecommuters by using email to send and receive writing assignments. High-speed access, an email account, and a PayPal account (for payment) are usually the main computer-based services that a freelancer needs to work for a company.

A small company can benefit from the services of a freelancer under certain conditions like these:

1. Hire a freelancer to help develop and write policies, procedures, form letters, reports, and charts. A professional writer can help you organize paperwork, a filing system, and documents of all kinds so that you know which forms to use and how to organize them in your office space. He or she can write, revise, edit, or proofread a procedures manual or policy handbook as well as a style guide for organizing written documents in your office.

2. A freelancer can help to promote your business to the community. A series of newspaper articles, a speech at the local library or civic organization, and a billboard ad or a print ad can help to attract new and repeat customers. Signs, advertisements, and even catalogue entries can make your company stand out. Creative copy can put you at the forefront of your industry and give you an edge over the competition.

3. Freelance writers can develop materials to attract customers beyond your client base. They can package advertising of your product or services in such a way that it can fit into a niche that serves other business-types as well. For example, if you operate a printing business, a freelancer might link your service with that of a graphic artist or a copywriter to draw customers for any or all of these services.

4. A freelance writer can publish a subscriber-based newsletter that will keep customers aware of your company. A print newsletter containing helpful information or recommended procedures can be sent to all new customers. Or a freelance writer might be able to design or maintain your business Website that can publish a monthly ezine for regular subscribers that are currently customers or visitors to the site who may become future customers.

A professional writer, depending on qualifications and experience, may be able to help with just about any type of writing task, from letters to reports or speeches. Browse the Web to find freelance writers who post samples of their work for review online. Ask about rates and turnaround time. Finally, explain the type of writing needs that you have to see if a particular writer can handle them. You will be amazed how a careful arrangement of several well-chosen words can bring a powerful attention stream to your home business.

How to budget for a small business

So you are considering a small business. More than hopes and dreams you will need to invest yourself in plans. A successful small business does not spring spontaneously from a wish. It needs the foundation that can only be provided by:

• Market research - Is there a need for the service/product I want to provide, who is my competition? Who is my audience?

• Business plan - What are you planning to do, how are you planning to do it? What expertise/experience do you bring to the task?

• Budget – How much will it cost? What will be the return? Lists all anticipated income and expenses for a specific period (typically your fiscal year).

Each is a valuable tool that can increase your chances of success as a small business owner. This point cannot be overemphasized. Do not allow enthusiasm or even fear to lead you away from completing the basic steps of starting/managing a small business

(There are a number of resources and people to consult for additional information if the prospect of writing a budget still feels overwhelming).

Although each step may require a good deal of thought and energy you will find in the long run that you save time and gain the control you need navigate even the choppiest waters.

Your budget should give a complete accounting of all anticipated revenue, revenue streams and expenditures. The budget is closely related to the business plan in that it details the plan in financial terms. For example, if you plan to hire two employees, your budget should include the money you plan to disburse for their salaries, benefits and taxes. If you plan to purchase or lease equipment the expense should be included in your budget. Planning expenses helps you determine how much revenue you will need to meet expenses and generate a profit.

Revenue

The money you take in for your goods and/or services is called your revenue or income. Your budget should reflect the dollar value of sales and services anticipated for a specific period (consider planning an annual budget then break it down for each month).

To arrive at this number it is a good idea to review profit and loss statements for the previous period, if available. If this information is not available, make your best guess using information from your trade journals and market research. Be specific. How many bicycles will you sell this month? At what price? How many consultations will you provide? At what price? At the end of each month compare budgeted vs. actual income and adjust accordingly. If the amount you take in exceeds your projections give yourself a pat on the back and look for ways to keep this trend going. If you did not earn as much as you planned – look for the why. What can you do to beef up revenue next month? Are you charging the right price? Are you offering something that is needed? Do you need to step up your marketing? The beauty of the budget is that it can accurately highlight what is working and not working as well as what you should continue and what you shouldn’t.

Income should be recorded on a cash basis. For example, billable services should be counted as income in the month of receipt. Have a backup plan for the (hopefully) rare times that you are not paid for services in a timely fashion.

Revenue Stream

If you sell bicycles and sponsor bicycle tours, each represents a different revenue stream. Your budget should include anticipated income from each revenue stream. Again, categorizing each revenue stream allows you to identify which aspects of your business are profitable and which are not.

Expenditures

Your budget should also include all anticipated expenses. Some of these will be fairly constant, or fixed, such as rent, leased equipment and salaries. Others, such as hourly wages and materials, may vary. A comparison of income and expenses will reveal any gaps. The budget can help you plan around these gaps and avoid cash shortfalls.

You need not sit down with pen and paper to write your budget. There are a number of excellent software programs that make short work of budgeting. These programs can serve you well by reducing arithmetic errors, generating customized reports (such as profit and loss statements, reports on specific revenue streams or budgeted vs. actual expenses) and creating importable data. Most are very user friendly, affordable and require no accounting experience.

There are a number of advantages to writing a small business budget. These include:

• The opportunity to reflect on the thoroughness of your business plan.

• Provides an annual and monthly picture of income and expenses.

• Outlines information you will need to complete loan/financing applications.

• Gives you the control you need to head off problems and plan for success.

• Gives the opportunity to plan ahead for shortfalls, slow downs, and busy seasons.

• Gives opportunity to plan finance or purchase of capital expenditures without too much distress.

• Lets you plan for a profit.

• Can pinpoint successful areas as well as those that may need additional marketing or other tweaking.

The budget should be regarded as a dynamic and fluid document. As such, you should refer to it regularly and make adjustments as needed. Your budget also helps you focus on monthly targets in terms of income and expenses. It also provides an objective view of how you are doing. This can be a great motivator for you as well as for your staff. Much more than a burden, the small business budget is a critical tool for planning and success.

Selling your Business – Step by Step Process

So finally the time has come to sell the business. After investing years of your time and uncounted thousands of dollars, it has become successful, providing for your needs and wants, and it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Where do you start?

A good time to start thinking about selling a business is right after startup, when it shows signs of beginning to succeed and become self-sustaining. Even if you are planning on bequeathing it to your progeny or a partner, it's never too early to think about what will happen afterwards.

The first step is to take your time--selling a business is a complex process and you will only do it once. Confidentiality is a necessity at this point, as word of an impending sale can cause repercussions among employees and business partners (suppliers, customers, etc.) alike.

Your position in the business is also a point to consider. If you are the sole proprietor, the decision is yours alone. However, if you are a partner or board member, selling your part of the business will involve more considerations.

Finding a good broker is worth any amount of time needed to locate one you are comfortable with. Check the Better Business Bureau for any investigation history, and get referrals from fellow business owners or from industry associations like the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA). This is a non-profit "trade association of business brokers providing education, conferences, professional designations and networking opportunities" (IBBA), as well as professional certifications and boasts over 1300 members.

Next, a professional appraiser should be consulted, as just like selling a home, a professional appraisal will give a fair value to begin negotiations with. Keep in mind though, an appraisal is an estimate of the fair value of a business' hard assets, and the market value of the business may be higher or lower, as a business is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.

Determining major terms and price are issues that you are going to have to work out with your broker, but a few basic factors come into play: what do you want to get out of the sale? Continuing salary? Lump sum? Stock options? This is a step often overlooked until late in the negotiations, often to the detriment of the seller.

Financing the sale is usually about 90% left to the seller. If you can't or won't be willing to cover the costs of the sale, it may not be a good time to sell.

Once you and your broker have located a buyer and agreed on a price, a Letter of Intent is drafted. This letter outlines the terms and tentative price in a non-binding document and allows the buyer time to thoroughly investigate the business. This process is subject to Due Diligence, as the onus of discovery is placed upon the buyer and buyer's agent.

After the discovery process is completed to both parties' satisfaction, the Purchase Agreement is drafted. This set of paperwork creates a formal agreement between buyer and seller regarding purchase price, terms, and other legal details. Once the respective lawyers have finalized the details and complied with state law requirements regarding the sale, the Purchase Agreement is signed, closing documents finalized, and the sale is complete. If everything has gone well, it's time to breathe a sigh of relief and start planning what to do with all that free time!

With a pay-per-click program, there's very little or even NO risk. You only pay when you make sales. Affiliate programs and joint ventures are examples. Set up deals where you pay only for each sale.
