3 Keys to a Successful Job Search

With all the layoffs that have taken place over the last couple of years, it's no wonder that many of those who are still employed often feel stretched to the maximum of their productivity. It can be very demanding looking for another job when your current one is continually stressing you out. After all, when you get home from a long and frustrating day, the last thing you want to do is give any more thought to the world of work. Unfortunately, most new jobs don't just fall into your lap-you have to go out and get them. Approaching your job search as strategically and as systematically as you would approach your next business deal can help keep the process manageable.

Initiation

If you were going to start a huge new project at work, would your first step be to just sit down and start the project? Of course not! A lot of planning and preparation go into any major project, and your job search should be no different. Therefore, the first step is NOT to sit down and start sending out dozens of generalized resumes to any job that sounds OK. Your first task should be to determine exactly what you're looking for in your next position. Just like you can't write a project plan until you know what the project is, you simply cannot write an effective resume or cover letter without some idea of where you'd like your career to go. You may find this part of the process to be the most time-consuming, as it requires some soul searching, however, it's an essential step in the process that must not be skipped.

Planning

Once you've determined your professional goals, you're ready to spend some time assembling your marketing tools-a cover letter, resume, and any other pertinent documents that support your message. This is essentially the same process as setting up a project at work; you need both plans and human resources for an effective job search. A professional resume writer can be an invaluable tool for a job seeker who's incredibly busy with his or her current vocation. Any resume writer will need you to gather and submit information about your past positions and achievements, but then let go of the reins; allowing the professional to agonize over each individual line on your resume will remove that weight from your own shoulders.

Execution

Only when you've established a goal and pulled together the tools needed to accomplish it should you actually start looking for and applying to jobs. Setting up e-mail alerts through sites like simplyhired.com or indeed.com can save you hours of scouring through online employment ads. If you tackle your search in a strategic and systematic manner, you should soon reach a place where you can go to your inbox, look through positions that may be a good fit for you, and then simply customize your polished resume for each application. Consider each quality job application you send off as a deliverable in the project of finding yourself another job. Whenever you successfully land your next position, you'll be able to close out this project and move on to the next one!

How to Succeed in the Hunt For Newly Qualified Solicitor Jobs

Now that the end of summer is within sight it is an important time for all those trainee solicitors who will soon be finishing their second year of their training contract. There will be many who have decided to continue their career in law and who will be hoping to secure one of the newly qualified solicitor jobs on offer. Given the recent economic crisis however the outlook for many might not be so great.

During the recession many law firms have been recruiting less and their retention rates of their trainee solicitors has gone down. This has meant that even where firms may have ordinarily offered a trainee a newly qualified solicitor job they have now not been able to due to financial constraints.

The knock on effect of this is that there will be a flood of newly qualified solicitors entering the solicitor job market to find another firm who might help them take the next step in their legal careers. The sobering fact however is that if many firms are unable to take on all of their own trainee solicitors upon qualification then they will almost certainly not be taking on newly qualified solicitors from outside the firm.

The reality for many therefore may be harsh in that they are unable to stay at their current firms and they may also be unsuccessful in succeeding in the hunt for another newly qualified role in a highly competitive job market.

If you find yourself in this position you have a few options. The first one is to try and form solid relationships with the key recruitment consultants for the area you are searching in and for the type of law you want to practise. This way they will think of you and contact you when they get a new newly qualified solicitor vacancy.

Secondly, you need to ensure that you are checking the legal press and all the law jobs websites on a daily basis for the new vacancies when they are announced. You can also be spending some time working on your application documents so that they are as good as they can be and are ready to put into action as soon as a vacancy comes up. It is advisable to search the internet for information, resources and tips relating to CV's, covering letters and application forms. What is not advisable is just using the same documents you used when applying for training contracts as this will be apparent to any recruitment consultant or law firm and could count against you.

If after an initial search for a newly qualified job you do not have success you may be advised to consider seeking another legal position, such as paralegal, so that you are still gaining legal work experience. This is often seen as a positive by potential employers and will also help with your continued professional development.

If for any reason you do not want to work in another legal position then you can always consider the option of taking a sabbatical or gap year and then return to the legal jobs market at a later date in the hope that it has improved and your chances of success are greater. You should be warned however that you will need to be able to justify this to a potential future employer and some may not view it in a positive light. Many will be ok with it though.

Conducting a successful job interview

One of the most scary tasks every new writer will eventually face is conducting that first interview. However, an interview need not be a frightening event. The following 10 tips will help to ensure that your first interview --and successive ones--will be remembered as an enjoyable experience.

KNOW YOUR SUBJECT: Find out everything you can about the person you are interviewing before making the initial contact. Show the person that you care enough to have done some research beforehand. For example, if you are interviewing an author about his/her latest book, at least read the book, or enough of it to be able to ask intelligent questions or make references to a certain character or scene.

KEEP THE INITIAL CONTACT SHORT AND TO THE POINT: Identify yourself immediately and explain why you want the interview. If the interview is for a certain publication say so. Once the person has agreed to be interviewed, arrange a specific time and place convenient for you and your subject. Clearly state how long you expect the interview to last. Remember to say "Thank you," and let the person know you appreciate the opportunity to interview him/her.

BE PUNCTIAL AND DRESS APPROPRIATELY: Never make a bad impression by being late for an interview. If you know you are going to be delayed, call the person with an explanation and an apology. Dress appropriately. Don't show up wearing blue jeans, wrinkled tee shirts, and scuffed running shoes.

MAKE YOUR SUBJECT FEEL RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE: Try to create a friendly relaxed atmosphere during the interview. Showing that you find the interview topic intriguing will make the person more inclined to open up.

DECIDE IF YOU WILL USE A TAPE RECORDER, TAKE NOTES, OR BOTH: If you plan to use a tape recorder, make sure you ask permission beforehand. Some people will clam up in front of a tape recorder, but may be less intimidated by a note pad and pen. However, if your subject has no objections to a taped interview, make sure the recorder is in perfect working order "before" you start taping. It's a good idea to take notes during the interview even if you use a tape recorder. Notes can be numbered for easy organization, whereas transcribing from tapes can be time consuming.

PREPARE QUESTIONS BEFORE THE INTERVIEW: Have approximately ten well-constructed questions written out in advance and arranged in the same order in which you plan to write the article. This will give shape to the story and save time, as well as keeping you focused. Leaving several blank spaces between numbered questions gives you plenty of room to write answers to specific questions in the proper place.

ASK OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS: Instead of asking questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no," such as "Would you advise young people to take up acting as a career?" phrase you question as "What advice would you give young people about to start an acting career?"

DON'T BE TOO STRUCTURED; LET YOUR SUBJECT "CHAT": Sometimes a person will go "off topic" and chat. This is fine to a point, and can oftentimes reward you with extra tidbits of information that you otherwise would have missed. However, if you find your subject wandering too far away from the topic, tactfully bring the conversation back to the specific nature of the discussion.

BE EXACT WHEN USING QUOTES: Let your subject know you will be using quotes when you write the article. If you are taking notes, be sure to quote the exact words your subject has said. Break up long quotes by paraphrasing. Never misquote or misrepresent anyone!

END THE INTERVIEW IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER: Conclude the interview as close to the specified time as possible. Ask permission for a follow-up call to verify proper spellings, dates, or other facts that may not be clear from your notes. Assure the person that, if at all possible, you will notify him/her as to when the article will be published. Remember to thank your subject graciously, and assure him/her that you have enjoyed the interview.

Successful recruitment strategies

In a labor market where employees are hard to come by, recruiting becomes essential. It is no longer possible to just post a ¡§help wanted¡¨ sign and expect the unemployed or underemployed to line up at your door¡Xespecially if your business is computer-related or service-related. Many service managers say that they are now in the position of constantly recruiting, even when they don¡¦t have an immediate opening.

The first step to effective recruiting is to fully understand the type of employees you need and what skills and knowledge your employees need to succeed at your business. Skills are those abilities needed to perform the job while knowledge is what the employee needs to know to perform the job.

The second step is to identify potential employees who have the necessary skills and knowledge. It is important at this point that you think beyond the traditional employee groups from which you have always hired. Yes, graduating students and workers with experience in your industry is one place to draw from. But with an ever-shrinking market and with an increasingly competitive economic environment, you need to draw people in from outside your traditional pools. Consider some of the following categories:

„h Former employees

„h Volunteers

„h Homemakers

„h Students

„h Family members of present employees

„h Legal immigrants

„h Military personnel and their dependents

„h Older workers

„h People with mental or physical disabilities

„h Ethnic minorities

„h People looking for a new career

„h People new to the community

„h People looking for part-time or telecommuting work

„h People currently on welfare or assistance

Now you have to determine how you will reach the people in these groups and let them know about opportunities at your business. Don¡¦t ignore traditional methods such as job postings or classified advertising, but be prepared to expand beyond this¡Xespecially if you are trying to reach groups of people who have NOT been reached through your traditional recruiting techniques.

Here are some creative ways you could notify people about your employment opportunities:

„h Sponsor work-study programs.

„h Invite students at local high schools or colleges to spend a day at your business shadowing an employee.

„h Provide mentored internship opportunities.

„h Post notices at churches in your targeted communities.

„h Meet representatives from minority agencies within the community.

„h Post notices at youth centers.

„h Advertise on bulletin boards, at the supermarket, library, health club, Laundromat, child care center, family restaurants, etc.

„h Place fliers on car windshields in parking lots.

„h Speak at ¡§English as a Second Language¡¨ classes.

„h Distribute leaflets at immigrant settlement centers.

„h Have an older worker whom you employ speak at a senior citizens center.

„h Distribute fliers at senior citizen housing complexes and meeting locations

„h Publicize in your employee publications or on employee bulletin boards information encouraging present employees to recommend family members for employment.

„h Offer a cash award for employees recommending a family member who is eventually hired and remains on the job for a specified time.

„h Visit schools that train people with disabilities.

„h Become acquainted with directors of local agencies offering services to people with disabilities.

„h Speak at adult evening education classes.

„h Go to businesses that are closing and tell employees there about your employment opportunities.

„h Post on electronic bulletin boards where there seem to be a high concentration of employees with the skills you are seeking.

As the job market continues to shrink, you may find that you need to be creative to reach even your traditional pool of employees. Managers in the service industry have shared some of the following creative strategies:

1. Turn your best employees into headhunters for your business. When there is an opening, ask your high-quality performers to refer people they know who would make good job candidates.

2. Look for good service no matter where you are. If you receive good service from a grocery store clerk, bank teller, restaurant, dry cleaning attendant, write them a thank you note that concludes with a comment that you could use someone with the commitment to service that they demonstrated and to call you if they are interested in talking about job opportunities.

3. Look among your customers. If you have a satisfied customer, find a non-obtrusive way (such as a card or sign in your business) telling them that you¡¦d like to talk to them about job opportunities.

4. Set up an employee hotline and keep it updated. When prospective job seekers call the hotline, they get a recorded message giving them a list of job openings and a brief description of each.

5. Sponsor a recruitment day each year and advertise it on a local billboard several weeks ahead of time.

6. Hold career fairs¡Xnot just at colleges but at high schools with career programs as well.

7. Partner with welfare-to-work programs who will train and mentor people whom you can employ.

How to conduct a successful and effective business meeting

The bane of every worker or volunteer is the meeting that lasts for hours and accomplishes little. While some people simply stifle inner groans and tolerate whatever contortions managers, the board, or a committee wants to make, other people have identified and implemented ways to make meetings more meaningful for the participants.

Several talented managers have defined meetings as falling on a scale between rambling and unstructured to focused and structured. The goal of most of these managers is to get their meetings as far over toward the focused and structured as possible. In that vein, an effective meeting might be defined as one that:

-Takes only as much time as is needed to accomplish its goals

-Sticks to the subject

-Meets its objectives or goals

There are several practical tools that anyone chairing a meeting can use to make a meeting more effective. These tools are ones that have been suggested by top-level managers, meeting experts, association resources, and books and articles on the subject. They are intended to be practical resources that can be used immediately to make meetings more effective.

Agendas

It is nearly impossible to talk about effective meetings without discussing agendas. A properly prepared agenda can have a tremendous influence on the meeting¡¦s outcome. Some agendas are more effective than others. Cyril Houle, author of ¡§Governing Boards¡¨, says that a meeting agenda should be carefully planned: ¡§The items listed should not be merely sketchy notations indicating generally what is to be discussed but should be described at such length that the board will know what to expect. The person responsible for the presentation of each item should be noted, as should the expected length of time for its consideration at the meeting. Due care must be given to keep the agenda of the board meeting from becoming too full. If matters can be handled outside the meeting, they should be.¡¨ (Houle, Governing Boards, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, CA 1989)

Many managers recommend that the meeting agendas be as detailed as possible. Simply putting down ¡§Treasurer¡¦s Report¡¨ is too vague and allows for too many unexpected issues to be brought up during a meeting.

Another manager suggests listing only committees on the meeting agenda that have something to report. Traditionally, an agenda might list every single committee, which leaves the committee chair feeling that they have to give some sort of report, even if they don¡¦t have anything to say.

Communication

Communication between meeting attendees is important. Letting all participants see an agenda before the meeting starts helps them come prepared to each meeting. It gives them a chance to review issues before the meeting begins and even get questions answered outside of the meeting.

Meeting Calendars

A meeting calendar can help a manager running a meeting determine when reports will be given and schedule issues to be discussed. This keeps participants from feeling that every issue must be discussed at every meeting. One manager said he uses the meeting calendar to help impose discipline at meetings. While the manager may not want to forbid anything that is not scheduled, he or she should encourage participants to stick to it.

Controlled Environments

Many managers have found that they can manipulate the meeting¡¦s physical environment to have a positive effect on the efficiency of meetings. Some managers even go so far as to remove all chairs from a meeting room, forcing participants to stand so that the meeting will go faster.

Even those managers that don¡¦t take things to such an extreme note the difference in length and meeting efficiency based on when they are held, where they are held, and the amenities available.

Meeting Procedures

Every meeting must have some sort of procedure by which it is run. General Henry Robert developed meeting procedures in 1876 by adapting the rules followed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Since that time, Robert¡¦s Rules of Order have been generally accepted as an efficient way to run a group meeting.

Some people, though, may resist Robert¡¦s Rules of Order as too stifling or because they inhibit debate. However, when used correctly, Robert¡¦s Rules can do just the opposite. They are ultimately meant to ensure that the majority is able to accomplish its goals while the views of the minority are protected and heard.

A danger to Robert¡¦s Rules of Order is what Edward Scannell, director of the University Conference Bureau of Arizona State University and past president of Meeting Planners International, calls ¡§motion sickness.¡¨ He points out that not all items require motions. If participants can agree to something quickly, then they should do so and save the procedures for when they are needed.

Consent Agendas

For every item opened for discussion, someone will feel obligated to say something. However, not all items that come before a group need to be discussed. There are always routine actions that must be voted upon due to tradition, bylaws, or policies. These might include contract renewals, ceremonial decrees, setting meeting times, etc. One way to reduce the amount of time spent on these routine items is for the chairperson to develop a consent agenda.

The consent agenda is given to all participants before the meeting. When the meeting starts, any participant can request that an item be removed from the consent agenda and opened for general discussion. All other items are voted on together, without further discussion.

It is important to note that the consent agenda should be used only to save time, not to push something through on an unaware team or board. The only items that should be placed on a consent agenda are those that are highly likely to pass unanimously without discussion or amendment.

Straw Votes

A straw vote is as much a consensus-building tool as a time-saving tool. A straw vote involves introducing an issue and allowing a moderate amount of discussion. When the chairperson senses that there is a majority or consensus on an issue, he or she can ask for a non-binding¡Xor straw¡Xvote on the issue using a show of hands. This enables participants to see whether there is a consensus and how other people are voting. If there is a clear majority, the chairperson can ask, ¡§Are you ready to vote?¡¨ The straw vote can cut down on discussion time as it reveals when a group is ready to vote, often long before they realize they are ready.

Discussion-Only Items

Some group shave found they can save time by bringing up an item at separate meetings. The first time an item is brought up it is either introduced without discussion (preferably at the end of a meeting) or introduced for discussion only. At the next meeting it can be brought up for a vote without any discussion. This method allows participants to work out any problems they have with the item between meetings instead of on the spot. They can then come to a meeting more prepared and comfortable with their decision.

The reward to implementing the tools discussed here can be a more effective meeting style.

How to run a successful freelance writing business

Running your own freelance writing business can be both exciting and scary, but the most important thing to remember is that you are in business. Your business will not run itself; there is much you will have to attend to in addition to writing. On addition to knowing how to write well, you also have to know the basics of running a business.

One of the most important aspects of running your freelance writing business will be scheduling and completing the work. One of the first questions clients will ask you (after ¡§How much does this cost?¡¨) will probably be ¡§How long will this take?¡¨ This depends upon how fast you can write well. If you are good, you can do in two days what it might take another writer a week to do. When pondering how long a project will take, think about the other work you have to do within that same time period. If you have several projects with close deadlines, you need to give yourself plenty of time to do each of them well. And at first, each project may take more time than you would wish. Also think sabot how much research you have to do for a project. If you have all the information at hand, you can probably complete it much more quickly than if you have to do quite a bit of reading first. Maybe you have an interview to do; you have to schedule that into your time frame. Consider adding on two days when you tell a client when their work will be done to compensate for unforeseeable events. And never take on more work than you can handle. You'll lose more clients by missing a deadline than any other way.

Another important aspect of your freelance writing business is building the client-writer relationship. You should set out to win clients, not assignments. If you can build a nice stable of clients with returning assignments, your income will increase more than if you treat each job as just an assignment. Here are a few tips on building good relationships:

- Seek out clients who can provide you with steady assignments rather just occasional work.

- Go out of your way to please your clients, especially regular ones.

- Build a personal relationship. Drop them an occasional line or even have coffee if that's feasible.

- Participate in client activities. Go to events that you are invited to attend.

- Be especially considerate of secretaries and assistants. They have a great deal of control over who sees their bosses and who doesn't. And you never know¡Ksome day they might be promoted and become one of your clients.

- Never, ever be rude or lose your temper. Be very patient and courteous, no matter what your real feelings are. Vent somewhere else.

Good time management skills are essential for the freelancer, since you don't have someone hanging over your shoulder making sure you get things done on time. Make sure your office is efficiently organized so you can find everything quickly. Keep separate files for each project, and consider part-time secretarial help if you need it and can afford it. Remember, your time is money, so make each hour count be turning unproductive time into billable time. Try to do as much business as possible by email, phone or fax rather than in person or by mail. You will save so much time this way and remember time is money.

Another very important aspect of your freelance writing business is getting paid. To insure this, you have to know how to bill clients and how to follow up on clients who are slow to pay. You will need to send an invoice to each client for each project completed. You can buy preprinted invoices at most office supply stores or you can write a simple one yourself, detailing the date, who it's to, what work was done, the amount owed to you, and your payment terms. Most writers expect to be paid within thirty days. Send the invoice promptly, within a week of completing the work. If you have trouble collecting payment, send a polite letter to your client requesting payment. Do not threaten or sound angry; the client may simply have forgotten. If you don't hear back within two weeks, send another polite, but a bit firmer letter. Send this letter certified, return receipt requested. If you still don't get paid within two weeks, try a phone call. Keep track of everything said, and remain polite but firm. You may suggest partial payments if the client can't pay all at once. Any further communication should be by certified letter. Continue sending letters at two-week intervals until you receive payment. If you still are not paid, you can either turn collection over to an attorney or collections agency. Warn your client before you take such action.

How to successfully interview for a job

Well, you have made it this far. Unless you have some connections on the inside of an organization, getting an interview can be a difficult feat. Depending on the job and the company, you can be in competition with literally thousands of applicants. Now, your goal is to make yourself stand out among the rest as the best possible candidate for the job. How do you do this? Read on and find out!

Preparation, of course, is the key to the whole thing. Start with your clothing. What is suitable attire for a job interview? Depending on the job you are interviewing for and the company's standards of dress, there is a range of possibilities. The basic outfit for a man is usually a dress shirt, dress slacks, tie, and dress shoes. This would be suitable for a man who interviewing for a number of positions. If you are interviewing for an office position, a business suit would, of course, be called for.

For a woman, a nice dress or skirt and blouse worn with dressy shoes would probably be a suitable outfit. Women can even wear a pantsuit as long as it is dressy and looks professional. There again, the outfit depends on the job that you are interviewing for. Make sure whatever outfit you wear is clean and pressed. Remember to pay special attention to your shoes. Make sure your shoes are clean and polished. And, unless, you are applying for a job as a tennis instructor, hula dancer, or construction worker, do not wear tennis shoes, sandals or thongs, or work boots to your interview.

Make sure, before you leave home, that your face is shaved, (men only, of course), your hair is neatly combed or styled, and that your hands, including underneath your fingernails, are clean and neat. Women can wear make-up if it's not overdone, and both sexes should take it easy on the old stinky stuff. You don't want to offend your prospective employer right off the bat with an overpowering stench of perfume or after shave.

Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your interview. Companies sometimes have paperwork for you to fill out, and, anyhow, you want to make a good impression of being punctual.

Once you arrive for your interview, remember to be pleasant and mannerly to each and every person you come in contact with, and that includes receptionists, secretaries, security guards, etc. Stand up and sit up straight and in a professional, business-like manner. Don't slouch in your chair; act alert and interested.

Answer all of the questions the interviewer gives you. It doesn't hurt to talk yourself up in order to try and sell yourself, but don't overdue it either. Be prepared to answer tricky questions that interviewers tend to ask, such as where you want to be in ten years from now. If you don't answer that you want to be employed at that certain company in a higher position than you started out at, then you are going to fail miserably. Watch out for tricky lead ons such as, "Tell me about yourself..." too. Don't sit there and blab on and on about yourself. Tell the interviewer about a hobby, your family, etc., but be brief.

Be especially prepared to explain any time lapses in your work history. Many prospective employers are very interested in that. Be honest. If you were unemployed, then say so. Don't try to lie by saying you were out of the country or that you were self-employed if you really weren't. Honesty counts, and prospective employers have ways to tell if you are lying or not!

Don't forget to thank the interviewer for his or her time at the end of your session. Then, don't forget to send a written thank-you note to the person who interviewed you. This is common courtesy, and by using it, you can help to put yourself above the rest of the crowd!

Writing A Resume: Tips For Your Success

Writing a resume - Let's be honest-nobody loves resume writing, especially their own! It's frustrating to string together all of those life "episodes" in a way that makes sense for the direction in which we are now heading. Then there are those questions we ask ourselves that distract us from the whole point of the resume writing process, like: "How much personal information should I include? How can I make mine stand out from other resumes? Should I include a photo?"

My experience in working with job-seekers has revealed a number of interesting observations. The first is that people seem to dislike resume writing because it means they have to edit their life. They fear leaving something out that could enhance their candidacy. The problem here is that too much information could cause the hiring agent to toss that resume in favor of candidates that have less complicated resumes. Resume how to can be complicated if you read a lot of the literature out there. However, I've found that the best results come from using a one page format that includes all the relevant information a hiring agent needs without all the time wasting fluff.

What I've shared may sound like a lot of common sense, but there really is a process to creating a good resume. Streamlining work history is usually the key concern for most people. Resume preparation becomes more difficult, however, for those who have problematic situations, but even those can be resolved. If you have limited work history, making your resume appear "thin," then add or elaborate on a "Special Skills/Training" section or "Special Skills/Experience" section. If you don't have a college degree or formal education beyond high school, you can still use your graduation from high school on your resume. Include other training, as well. For those with a long military background, make sure your duties are expressed in everyday language, and show a relation between that work and your new career objective.

The most important action to take when it comes to how to do a resume is to adopt a marketing mindset. With a basic format and the right mindset, that resume headache you started out with will never haunt you again. Some people would rather avoid dealing with how to write a resume altogether and seek help. If you plan to use a service for getting help writing a resume, it is important to know who is helping you. Check their credentials and background so that you can make sure you're getting someone helping that knows what he or she is talking about. Most of these services charge a fee, and it is obviously stupid for you to pay money to someone who doesn't really know what advice to give you.

Writing a resume is not an easy task but it is crucial to your job hunting success. Stand out from the crowd and get your dream job by finding out how to build a resume here: http://www.resumehowtoguide.com.

Job Interview: Dressing up Successfully

Because your appearance and dressing sense also reflects your personality and therefore it is very important that you are properly dressed for the interview.

This however doesn't mean that you should go out and invest in a new wardrobe, just be sure that you are able to put together an adequate interview outfit. Following are a few tips:

1. Generally, a professional-looking dress or suit with low-heeled shoes makes the best impression. In more conservative industries like law and banking, a suit is a safer bet than a dress. At the same time, some hiring managers in "creative" industries like advertising and publishing look for a more informal, stylish look that reflects the applicant's individuality. Thus in whatever field you are use your best judgment and wear whatever is both professional and comfortable for you.

2. Also make sure that your clothes are spotlessly clean and well-fitting, that your hair style is neat and businesslike, and that your shoes are clean and attractive.

3. Avoid excessive jewelry, makeup, or perfume. Remember you are going for an interview and not a party so try to be as natural as you can.

4. Be sure to carry a watch, pen, and writing pads for taking notes. A briefcase or portfolio, if you have one, will help complete the look of professionalism. And don't forget to take a few extra copies of your resume!

5. Avoid carrying a purse as far as possible.

Top Five Habits for Career Success at Entry Level

I am blessed to have some of the best bosses coach me when I first entered the working world. They passed to me what seemed like, at that time - pretty obvious things one would do when in the working world.

What seemed pretty obvious as habits for career success isn’t always so. As you start on your career path you begin to forget some of the basic habits. Therefore, it is essential to drill these habits deep enough to remember them.

As I progressed in the corporate world, I noticed that these are good habits that should be passed down to my own people just as I have benefited from internalizing them. Here are the 5 basic yet important habits for career success:

1. Get Organized
Regardless of your work, you need to get organized. If yours is office work, you will surely have filing to do. What about your emails, your electronic documents and folder system? Ever had colleagues who ask you to resend them the email you sent last week? No matter how many times you sent, they seem to have deleted it or lost it? And it is the same thing with electronic documents?

When you organize your clutter, work space and computer, you become more productive. You become efficient and effective. This adds to your good name as you progress in the organization. It is also a good habit to cultivate as you move up the corporate ladder. Imagine having more work to organize as you progress?

2. Manage Your Time
This is another simple and obvious habit amongst the habits for career success list. But I assure you; this habit is some of the biggest weaknesses people have in the corporate world. I urge you as a career newbie to start cultivating this habit of managing your time early.

Managing your time isn’t rocket science. Start with a simple to do list and a daily, weekly, monthly and year scheduler. All you have to do is to pen in all the meetings, appointments and tasks in the scheduler. As you get better you can start to use more sophisticated techniques. Managing your time is all about planning what you do and doing what you plan.

3. Under Promise, Over Deliver
As a career newbie, you would have a tendency to try to impress your bosses, colleagues or even clients. This can be driven by your raw enthusiasm.

However, remember that in your quest to impress, you run the risk of destroying what little reputation you are starting to build. This is especially so when you fail to deliver on your promises regardless of how small. It could be a simple report your bosses asked but if you fail to deliver it on time, the size of the report doesn’t matter. Fact remains that you did not deliver.

Always remember that one of the important habits for career success is to under promise and over deliver. It is about managing expectations and it is about measuring your own strengths and weaknesses. It is also about knowing how to manage your own time. So, while volunteering for additional tasks is a good initiative, you may want to gauge if you can live up to that promise.

Under promise and over deliver means to say "yes" when opportunities present themselves and learning to say "no" when you know you cannot deliver.

4. There Are Always Next Steps
There are always next steps after meetings. Never let any meetings end without a clear action plan that include who to do what by when. We attend far too many meetings in order to let them slip by without clear next steps to follow through. Having clear next steps ensures you become more productive and time is well spent in meetings.

Meetings are important to assign, brief and clarify. You should not let them slip by without clear next steps. If you are chairing one, makes sure this happens. If you aren’t then ask for your set of next steps. This is one of the basic habits for career success you would bring with you for a very long time.

5. Feed Your Mind
Read motivating books; listen to tapes and watch inspiring movies. We are sometimes so inundated with negative vibes at work that you should feed your mind with positive energy. One way is through books, tapes and movies. They need not be self-improvement and self-help oriented although I find them extremely useful.

Of course, a healthy body is important too. Eat healthily and exercise. This ensures you have the energy to take the work-week with a healthy body, mind and soul.

Start cultivating these 5 important habits for career success and make a difference in your work life.

Need Help With Choosing a New Career Path? Zig-Zag Your Way to Success

By Bridget Quigg

Would you consider your career path “typical?” Did you move step-by-step from an assistant to a senior director in the same company? Or did you zig-zag from salesperson to set designer to sea captain?

Online salary database PayScale.com decided to take a look at the many leaps, steps and sharp turns people take during their working lives. With PayScale’s GigZig career path tool, you can look at real people’s career path information to see what workers in a certain job were doing five years ago and what they go on to do five years later. Some of the answers may surprise you.

Will working as a lifeguard guarantee you a career in graphic design one day? Not necessarily, but it turns out that graphic designer is the second most common career move for lifeguards, after registered nurse, as reported by PayScale users. While it can’t predict the future, GigZig may help with choosing a new career path by seeing the wide variety of career moves that are possible.

Below is a roundup of real people’s career paths ranging from the predictable to the unexpected.

1. Bank Teller

The median annual salary for a bank teller is $21,900 per year This wage can pay the rent and help you buy some groceries, but not much else. What if you could nearly double that income in five years? It turns out that bank tellers may do just that. Some go on to become staff accountants, earning $42,600 per year. Others become loan officers, earning $42,400 annually. Some make a surprise leap to the healthcare industry working as certified medical assistants, earning $27,400 per per year.

2. Administrative Assistant

Administrative assistants do it all. They stuff envelopes, answer calls, make travel arrangements and manage schedules, all for about $30,300 per per year. An “admin” in any office usually has the opportunity to move up if they show their mettle and ingenuity. Where do they go? Among PayScale users, the majority become executive assistants, earning $35,400 per per year. The highest-paid, former administrative assistants end up as senior executive assistants or executive assistants to CEOs, earning about $50,000 per year. The most creative career shift made by some admins? Working as marketing coordinator, earning $37,400 per year.

3. Medical Assistant

The average salary for a medical assistant is $26,700per per year. Responsibilities include filling out insurance forms and tidying up exam rooms. Where could this healthcare industry gig take you? Some medical assistants moved closer to treating patients as surgical technicians, earning $36,500 per year. The highest paid ones end up as physician assistants (PAs) and typically earn around $76,800 per year. That’s an annual salary boost of $50,100 in just five years. The most unusual switch? Some medical assistants become clinical research coordinators and work on the academic side of medicine earning $41,300 per year.

4. Construction Laborer

Construction laborers feel the blows of seasonal changes and economic downturns more than most. But when they do have work, they earn about $31,600 per year. Within five years, where do they go for bigger bucks? Some graduate to construction equipment operators or cement masons, earning over $40,000 per year on average. But, it’s possible to jump a whole $40,000 annually by learning the skills of a construction project manager, who make an average of $71,600 per year. Typical? Maybe not. Possible? Absolutely. The most unexpected switch comes from those construction laborers who trade in jeans for slacks and become computer aided design drafters, earning $35,700 per year.

5. Musician or Singer

Choosing a career as a struggling musician has long been seen as a gig that gets you nowhere. But, according to PayScale’s findings, it takes people just about anywhere. The majority of the results for former full-time musicians and singers are in the music arena, such as church organist; music director; or art, drama or music teacher. But, other musicians have made career moves that are more unexpected, like working as a grant writer, security officer, staff accountant or bank branch manager. Which choice is the best paid? Professor of higher education earning $73,534 per year.

6. Legal Assistant

This gig gets you plenty of exposure to life in the legal system. Legal assistants earn about $34,600 per year to gather and analyze legal articles, prepare affidavits or other documents, file pleadings, etc. It looks like when they move on, many legal assistants become paralegals, getting a bump in salary to $41,600 per year. The ones who earn the most become lawyers, earning about $81,800 per year, or corporate or senior paralegals, earning close to $55,000 per year.

7. Assistant Financial Consultant

For those who want to one day manage wealthy people’s money, starting out as an assistant financial consultant might work well. You can be trained on the job after completing a finance or related degree and earn $39,800 per year to direct and coordinate financial activities at a branch, office, or department of a bank, brokerage firm, or insurance department. The next step for many assistant financial assistants is working as a personal financial advisor, making about $55,600 per year. Other top earners have become consulting accountants, earning $63,600 per year or senior financial analysts pulling in $73,000 per year.

Fostering Success in a New Job

Looking forward to starting your new job? Nervous? You might be joining a company after a brief hiatus from the workforce or transitioning from one job to another. Regardless of the situation it can be challenging to slip into a new role with ease. After all, it’s a new environment; there are new people, processes, and systems; you have a new boss that you will need to get to know; and then of course there is the job itself! To help facilitate your new start and get you off on the right foot, here are some tips to drive your (imminent) success:

Keep Notes: I know I harp on writing things down. I do this for a reason! Writing things down will prevent you from forgetting them! DUH. It seems so obvious. It is a hard thing to do though. I know – really – I know. I try to keep a food journal so I can monitor what I eat. It’s hard. I’m not sure why I can’t just grab it and write down the miniscule amounts I consume. But, for some reason, I don’t like doing it. For the job though – it’s important. That way you don’t have to keep asking the same things over and over of your new coworkers. It’s hard to remember everything. If you write it down you can refer back to the notes. As you get more comfortable you can get rid of the stuff. Five Best Note-Taking Tools , Fifty Ways to Take Notes , and if you want to stay flexible but paper based try the pocket mod .

Interact with your coworkers: Make sure you are social with the other people that work in the office. Introduce yourself; get to know the other people. People like to work with people they like. This is no time to become an introvert. This doesn’t mean you should break out with your rendition of “I Wanna Rock” – I saw Rock of Ages this weekend. For those of you who grew up in the ‘80’s – it’s not to be missed! Interacting with new co-workers will give you the downlow on the place and some of the politics. You will get valuable tidbits of information. The information you gain can help you understand the lay of the land – particularly early on when you need information the most. Also, don’t forget to make friends with the folks that keep the trains running on time – facilities, IT and the cleaning staff – they often know more than everybody else about what actually happens in your new company.

Get the Paperwork Completed: Once you arrive at your new office, there will be a deluge of paperwork for you to fill out – no doubt required by your human resource department. Do it and submit it on time. HR is a valuable resource for you. Don’t neglect the process things. You want benefits, right? You want to participate in the 401(k), right? You want to get PAID, right? I don’t think I need to say anymore about it.

Connect with your Management: Just because you started a new job doesn’t mean your manager is going to come running down the hall to welcome you with a basket of warm muffins and two free passes to The King and I. Check in early. Once you have gotten settled in and have started to do some work, dip your big toe in the water. Get feedback so you know if you are on the straight and narrow. This will keep you poised for success or let you know that you need to take a left turn somewhere to ensure you are performing the job you were hired for.

Socialize Outside of Office Hours: The gang is going out for burgers and beer after hours? Go along. The people you work with can really help you get acclimated. It is an important part of establishing a professional bond. Of course, you have to keep it that way. Leaving the bar at 2am looking like you are a coat with two of your newest coworkers the hangers is not a good idea. Keep it professional and fun. These people will be an important part of the environment – especially if you need to partner with them on projects. It is a lot easier to get things done when you don’t have people internally trying to thwart your efforts.

This one can be controversial – some don’t like to mix work with personal lives and before you know the politics tread lightly – going out with peers that happen to work for the guy that beat out your boss for the last big promotion can be a CLM (career limiting move.)

Get Comfortable in your new Environment: Have a picture of your hubby? Dog? Girlfriend? It’s ok to bring in one or two small personal items. It keeps you human. That’s it though. No bringing in a dump truck worth of stuffed Smurf collectibles. It makes you more approachable to have a personal item in your workspace. Make sure you keep everything neat – especially if you work in an open office environment. Being a slob is frowned upon in an office. (It’s probably frowned upon at home too – but I’m not covering that here.)

It takes a little time to get your bearings and get down to business. Focus on starting some work in between completing orientation, training (if applicable), and filling out your pile o’ forms. It will help you hit the ground running when the gun goes off. The process of adapting to a new environment can be challenging. It doesn’t happen overnight so be patient as you and your new employer get to know each other. Relax and give it your best effort. No doubt, you will be happy you did.

7 Ways A More Aggressive Job Search Produces Better Results

By: Leslie Kearney

Is your job search producing lackluster results at best? Don't settle for a job search that just creeps along! Instead, consider taking a more aggressive approach to take fuller advantage of high performing tactics.

You need to know that an aggressive job search techniques are unconventional, often radical, and always strategic. And they work! They outperform traditional job search strategies in 7 key ways:

(1) Make your aggressive tactics proactive: If you have been in the job market very long this is the way it is typically done. Traditionally you submit your resume and cover letter, then passively sit back and wait for a call. Hopefully to an interview. But in an aggressive job search, you set the pace for your campaign through weekly networking calls or emails. These should include weekly follow-up contacts with hiring managers that you have sent your email and cover letter to. These will include both posted or anticipated job openings. By making 10 - 15 such calls each week, you can increase the pace of your results. And affect your search exponentially.

(2) Target your aggressive job search tactics: If you spend all your time only seeking online job postings, then you're missing out on all kinds of highly targeted job leads. Instead focus on specific industries, employers, geographic areas, and position types to help you magnify the number of interviews and job offers you receive. Don't make the mistake of applying for everything you see. Doing that may make you feel productive, but such a shot-gun approach to job searching ultimately fails to help you secure the position you desire. For several years I was in sales and the companies I worked for pushed cold calling. I hate cold calling because it is unproductive. So I focused in applying the above techniques to sales. They worked. I was always way ahead of my peers who spent their time cold calling.

(3) Aggressive job search tactics are consistent: If you sit back and wait for the interesting jobs to show up on job boards and in ads, you are guaranteeing failure or at best prolonging the agony of job searching.

If you submit 8-10 resumes in some weeks, say, and only 1-2 in others, then you are setting yourself up for failure. However by leveraging an aggressive job search will enable you to consistently submit 25 or more resumes per week, which in turn will produce a regular series of job interviews. And a series of interviews boosts your odds of receiving one or more job offers. That’s the plan after all, isn’t it?

(4) Aggressive job search tactics are customized: No matter how you figure, a job search is something of a numbers game just as it is in the sales scenario I mentioned above. The philosophy behind traditional job search tactics of blasting your resume to hundreds of employers all at once, is a job is a job, is a job. But that leaves no room for you to target specific industry segments or position types. A more aggressive job search technique will stress your individuality by weaving your personality and career-related values into your resume, cover letter, and interview responses that boosts the odds that hiring managers looking for someone like you will actually find you. If you read through the articles on our website ResumeHelpBlog.com you will find that is our basic philosophy because all jobs are not created equal.

(5) Aggressive job search tactics are free or low-cost: If you took advantage of all the job search offers available on the Internet, you could easily spend hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars, and still see little to no positive results. The good news, though, is that by using an aggressive job search technique by their very nature either free or extremely low-cost. Many HR consulting firms who work with job seekers will often stress that they give you hundreds of hiring employer names to contact (that's how they justify their high fees). Did you know that you can access that same information on the Internet for free? You will be surprised at what you can find on the Internet, or maybe not surprised at all.

(6) An aggressive job search tactic will restore balance to your life: Many things in life output and effort, yet overlook the power of automation. Searching for a job is no different. By taking advantage of automated functions in your pc's software and on online job search tools, you could save time every week. Life is too short, to spend all your time hunting down job leads. Enhance the quality of your life by automating your job search in every way possible.

(7) And finally aggressive job search tactics will penetrate the Hidden Job Market: One of the greatest weaknesses of traditional job search methods is that they focus on the Visible Job Market, or those jobs that are both currently available and known outside the hiring organization. A major company where my daughter works hires that way and pays a bonus for referrals. My daughter has helped several friends find work with this firm and in the process has pocketed several hundred dollars in bonuses. Almost three quarters of all jobs are never advertised in the Visible Job Market. Most companies would prefer to promote from within or hire from a referral of a trusted employee. So what does a smart job seeker do? They tell everyone they know that they are available. You have to leverage the power of the aggressive job search tactics to penetrate the Hidden Job Market as much as possible.

You don't have to wait for a hot economy to land the job you really want. By taking advantage of as many aggressive job search tactics as possible, you will dramatically shorten your job search while boosting the interviews and offers you land.

Get A Well Paying Job After The Cdl Training Program

By: Kris Koonar

If you love to travel all around the country by road, do not mind driving for long hours at a stretch and would like to earn some serious money, then truck driving is the best option for you. To get a well paying trucking job, however, you need to acquire your Commercial Driving License [CDL]. Here are some tips on how to get a well paying job after a CDL training program.

Join a driving school that not only promises quality training but also actually provides it. Avoid, for example, driving schools that promise to make you an excellent truck driver in 2 weeks. The driving course should be a minimum of at least 3 weeks in order for you to learn not only the basics but also the finer nuances of driving. Before you join any school, ensure that you will get at least 50 hours hands on truck driving. The Professional Truck Driver Institute [PTDI] requires that students have at least 44 hours of actual truck driving experience. Some schools mislead students by claiming that you could get up to 80 hours behind the wheel.

Confirm the term 'behind the wheel' since it might imply that you might be sitting in reality behind with four other students while the 5th student is driving the truck. If you can afford slightly higher fees, then join a school that offers a one-student-per-instructor training. This will allow you to absorb all the required knowledge without other students to disturb you. If your driving school has a tie-up with several freight companies or other corporations that require drives on a regular basis then that would greatly increase the chances of landing a job as soon as you get your CDL. Remember that in case you want to drive trucks with hazardous chemicals, then you will need special HAZMAT training. If you plan to drive trucks with double or triple trailers, then you will also need training in handling such trucks.

Your driving school should also have a placement department that can quickly hook you up with the right company, once you have finished your course. Many companies might not hire freshers, and you might have to join at a lower pay scale and prove your mettle within six months to a year in order to move to a higher scale. If you do not have the required money to join a driving school, then many companies offer to train you for "free". Remember that you will be bound to work in that particular company for around two years in order to pay for your "free" training and in case you want to leave your job before two years, then the cost of the "free" training will be adjusted in your salary. So remember, nothing in life is "free"! If you have completed your training through a reputed accredited driving school then you should not have any problem in securing a well paying job.

It is therefore imperative that you attend a driving school that imparts not only theoretical knowledge but actually teaches you how to drive under various road and weather conditions. This will ensure your safety and even keep others safe when you are on the road. Due to the high demand for truck drivers, you can easily get a well paying job once you have successfully completed your CDL training program.
